- - - - - - - - - - - - | Throne for the Disheveled clothes valet rack by Paul Gurda c1986 Item # 7669 Click HERE to inquire about this item Paul Gurda is an American architect educated at Yale and the Yale School of Architecture, in practice in New York from 1980 to 2006, and now resident in Singapore, where he designs housing for Habitat for Humanity. He designed this valet stand as a utilitarian homage to the Scots architect Charles Rennie MacIntosh for the 1986 Architectural League of New York show '397 Chairs,' held at the IDC.His imagined client for the piece was a person with too much wardrobe but not enough closet space, or simply an inability to put things away. The central coathanger section and the ladder frames stepping away at both sides provide plenty of options for draping clothes whiler still maintaining their sparsely elegant appearance. One of his unable-to-put-anything-away friends was inspired to title the stand a "Throne for the Disheveled."It is assembled from matte-black painted birch dowels of several diameters and hand-turned black-lacquered ash knobs, 'shoulders,' and seat, on which the grain of the wood is highlighted with Chinese red lacquer. It was crafted by the Hoboken NJ custom furniture partnership Moss/Fauset. Measures 53.25 inches high at back, 15.5 inches top of seat, 13 inches deep with two wings that each measure 16x32 inches and two wings that measure 40 x 16 inches. There were only two made.
