| - - - - - | Antique Victorian hall tree c1890 Item # 4328 Click HERE to inquire about this item Antique Victorian hall tree. This hall tree is made of oak in the Art Nouveau style. Art Nouveau is characterized by curving, sinuous forms inspired by nature. This style originated in England around 1890, but reached its peak of expression in painting, silver, furniture, jewelry, and architecture in the cities of Paris, Vienna, and Prague. This hall tree's origins are not quite so exotic - it was probably made in Grand Rapids (Michigan) about 1900. It apprears to be entirely original, including the beveled mirror, beautiful hardware, and finish

- - | Early European oak dowry Blanket Chest c1780 Item # 4331 Click HERE to inquire about this item Period antique German oak dowry trunk. This is a typical example of its form, with the beautifully wrought iron strapwork, arched top, and hinged inner storage compartment. I have seen and handled many such European trunks. They were so well constructed, with such strong materials, they almost never wore out. The 1716 engraved date mark is commensurate with the trunk's style and construction.

- - - - - - | Antique gentleman's chest of drawers 1870 Item # 4334 Click HERE to inquire about this item Antique gentleman's chest of drawers. I don't think it ever had much to do with a plantation. Its origin is northern Europe, probably Sweden or Germany. It was made circa 1870. It appears to be made of oak, but I cannot be certain through photographs. European oak has a more closed and even grain than ours. You can see a similar chest on my website, item 3587, for comparison. The basic form of each chest is the same; note the upper bow-front drawers and the bun feet. The difference is in the level of craftsmanship. Walnut is a finer wood, and the matched veneers and turned columns are sophisticated features.

- - | Arts and crafts oak arm chair Item # 4337 Click HERE to inquire about this item This American Arts and Crafts oak chair is a transition piece, which is a blend of design elements from a certain time span (in this case the third quarter of the 19th century). The shaped seat apron and the cut-out moldings beneath the arms are a Victorian aesthetic. The caned back and seat, with round-edge molded frame come from the Art Nouveau designs of the Thonet brothers and the Kohn brothers. The slatted sides, flat armrests, and quarter-sawn oak frame are typical Arts and Crafts features (but true Arts and Crafts construction is beefier, with visibly mortised joints). It was probably made in Chicago about 1900. In the book Chicago Furniture 1833-1983, by Sharon Darling, 1984, We found a tiny photograph on page 245, taken from a 1905 House Beautiful Magazine, showing a remarkably similar chair. Unfortunately, no maker was credited
