This "Carved wood" dark oak"Black Forest wall self" is quite important. We have only had a few pieces of this quality in our 30 years of selling fine antiques. Black Forest wood carvings from the mid to late 19th century are difficult to come by. This carving depicts what looks like a heron that has just flow into a marsh grabbing a snake by its feet and flying upward to the sky above. What makes this piece so important is that (not including the original top self) was carved from a large single piece of dark oak, not carved from several pieces laminated together like the later pieces we come across. The carving measures14 and one half inches high, and 8 and one half inches wide, 5 and one half inches deep. The original shelf measures 11 and one half inches wide and 8 and one half inches deep.
