- - - | Eastlake upholstereed arm chair Item # 5501 Click HERE to inquire about this item An American chair of the Victorian period, made of walnut, circa 1880. This particular style is called Eastlake, after the English architect and writer Charles Eastlake. In the last half of the 19th century, a social reform movement began to change the way many people thought about style and health in the home. People had filled their homes with large pieces of carved furniture, thick upholstery, and heavy draperies that collected dust and germs and kept out healthful air and light. The new simpler style began with ideas by Eastlake, who wrote the book Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details. Pieces of furniture in this new Eastlake style had low relief carvings, incised lines, moldings, geometric ornaments, and flat surfaces that were easy to keep clean. They were generally crafted of oak, walnut, and cherry, and made throughout the upper eastern half of the United States
