The five piece service was made by the Whiting Company and sold at retail by the Philadelphia firm of Bailey Banks & Biddle. The service tray is not sterling because it lacks the required series of English hallmarks lion, monarch's head, maker's mark, and date mark. The Whiting Company originated in 1840 in North Attleboro, MA. It later moved to Newark, NJ, and to Bridgeport, CT. It was finally purchased by Gorham in 1926, and moved to Gorham's headquarters in Providence, RI. The W mark is still used, sometimes with a gryphon. This service is in the early Georgian style.
