Antique German porcelain figurines

Item # 3520
Click HERE to inquire about this item

Antique German porcelain figurines. We believe this pair of porcelain figurines are French copies of Sevres or Meissen originals, made during the 19th century. There is a good possibility that they were made by Edme Samson, a 19th century porcelain repairer whose Paris firm became known for copying German, French, English, and Chinese porcelain. The marks he used were variants on the letter S, depending on what he was copying. These figures are quite lovely.

Potpourris and pastille (incense) burners became popular among the upper classes to mask the odor of raw sewage wafting into their homes from the city streets. Ormolu achieved its highest technical and artistic development in 18th century France, and the technique spread to England. However, workmanship had deteriorated by the 19th century. Gilt bronze rather than ormolu. By the 20th century, true ormolu was no longer produced because the process was so toxic.
