Red Trees impressionistic acrylic on canvas landscape view of Deer Isle, Maine, by John Lo Presti. It measures 15 x 25 inches and is named and signed on the back. Mr. Lo Presti was born (about 1940) in Rochester, NY. He relocated to Seattle. He paints his distinctive color field landscapes in the Pacific Northwest, western Connecticut and Maine. The following is the artist’s personal statement: "My primary subject of "landscape" has a 500-year-old tradition in Western art. It is obvious that it is no longer possible to make traditional landscapes as an avant-garde activity. However, I can draw on the tradition without slavishly copying it. The earliest landscape painters were interested primarily in tone and chiaroscuro. Yet, the whole approach to color changed in the twentieth century, and my antecedents draw upon researches into pure color relations. My approach is affected by this more recent reworking of traditional landscape painting. My work does not just repeat the past; I draw from tradition but use my sensibility to create new images. I try to capture the strength of the old by using new tools."
