Antique Japanese sculpture of a rearing horse. Hand carved wood by sculptor Mitsunori, Taishô period 1912–1926. The rampant stallion is perfectly balanced to stand on its hind legs without tipping. Signed by the artist beneath. The horse measures 14.5 inches long from nose to tail, 9 inches high and 3.5 inches wide. The surface has a glowing patina and a rich dark brown color. There are 2 finely done old repairs, one to the leg and one to the tail, where each had broken off and been reglued. This is the finest wood sculpture we have ever had the good fortune to acquire.
