Danaides by Paul Vincze pure silver bas relief sculpture

This bas relief sculpture titled "Danaides" was made from a single sheet of pure silver, backed and framed with solid walnut. We estimate there are approximately 60 to 70 ounces or more of .999 silver in this panel. It is number 26 of a limited edition of 75 designed by Paul Vincze and produced for Vito Rossi by the Franklin Mint on February 14, 1969. The solid walnut frame measures 32" wide x 21" high x 1.75" deep, and the sculpture measures 14.5" high x 25" wide x .5 " deep. Paul Vincze, medallist: born Galgagyork, Hungary on 15 August 1907; married 1958 Emilienne Chauzeix; died Magagnosc, France on 5 March 1994. Paul Vincze was a prolific artist and an internationally acclaimed medallist. He excelled at portraiture and his work reflects his sensitive approach to the subject, his mature work achieving an almost Renaissance quality. His sitters were many and varied, including Sir Winston Churchill, President Harry Truman, Pope Paul VI, Yehudi Menuhin, Prince Karim Aga Khan and J B Priestley. He studied at the State School of Arts and Crafts at Budapest and later under Ede Telcs, an extremely talented portraitist; Vincze absorbed his instruction with enthusiasm and, in later years, expressed the opinion that Telcs 'was the greatest medallist of this generation'. From 1935 to 1937 Vincze studied in Rome and then returned to his native country. Nazi persecution forced him to flee, however, and in 1938 he came to England, setting up his studio in London. He lived there for the rest of his life except for annual visits to his house in the south of France. He became a British subject in 1948.He was the recipient of several awards including a Premio Especial at the International Exhibition, Madrid, in 1951, a silver medal at the Paris Salon of 1964 and the first gold medal of the American Numismatic Association, 1966. Cross, Engraving with added hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. Name of subjects inscribed in contemporary script on bottom of image. pretty perfectHe was educated at Glasgow University 1749. In 1752 he joined the British Army, becoming an ensign in the 52nd Regiment of Foot. He became a lieutenant in 1759 and a captain (in the 91st Regiment of Foot) from 1760. By 1762 he was a major, and served in the campaign against the Spanish invasion of Portugal (1762). After a period on half pay in 1763, he was appointed to the 14th Regiment of Foot in 1764. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1765. Between 1766 and 1768, Dalrymple was in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1768, he was placed in command of a detachment of two regiments sent to Boston, Massachusetts, to support embattled royal officials who were having trouble enforcing the unpopular Townshend Acts. Troops in his command (although he was not directly involved) were involved in the Boston Massacre, in which five civilians were killed when those troops fired into a crowd. Amid continuing hostility, Dalrymple acceded to the request of Acting Governor Thomas Hutchinson to remove his troops to Castle William, an island fortress in Boston harbour. In 1772-1773 Dalrymple received a local promotion to major general and commanded a force which captured the West Indian island of St Vincent. He returned to Britain in 1773. He continued to be in touch with his American Loyalist friends in Boston. He was saddened but not surprised by the Boston Tea Party. After the American War of Independence broke out in 1775, Dalrymple returned to North America. He served as quartermaster general 1779-1783. He was promoted to brigadier general (1779) and then major general (1782). After the end of the war Dalrymple was attacked for alleged corruption, but General William Howe stoutly defended his former subordinate and the allegations were dropped. Dalrymple then went into politics. He represented Wigtown Burghs in the British House of Commons from 1784 to 1790. Between 1796 and 1798 he sat for Duleek in the Irish House of Commons. Dalrymple was promoted to lieutenant general 1793 and general 1798.

Josha A Beal outdoor photograph of NYC family c1870

Josha A Beal was an American photographer, born in 1831. This is a rare large format outdoor photograph of a well-to-do family their home in NYC circa 1870. The original American black walnut frame with gold insert measures 23 x 28 x 3 inches. The viewing area of the photograph is 12 x 19 inches. The insert (which is original) states J A Beal Photographer 587 and 603 Broadway and 16 Beekman St N.Y. Good condition with slight fading under original glass. The family is enjoying a game of croquet. There is a courting bench next to the house. Included in the image are gardeners, a maid, a governess, little girls with croquet mallets, and a driver waiting in a 2-horse carriage. A Photographic "View of New York" monumental 5-part panorama of lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge Tower was shot by by Beal in 1876. The albumen prints, total size 10.5 x 87 inches (26.7x221 cm.), flush mounted, sold on 10/4/2012 at Swann Galleries in NY for $96,000. See New York, An Illustrated History, 170-171. Beal's view of New York City was shot in January 1876, after the photographer wrestled his heavy camera equipment, glass plate negatives, and tripod up the tower's thirty flights of stairs. Beal exposed five negatives to create a composite photograph nearly seven feet long. The images provided a never-before-seen sweeping panorama of lower Manhattan's landmarks and commercial activity along the East River. In the distance, landmarks such as Trinity Church, the Western Union Building, St. Paul's Chapel, the new Post Office, and the Tribune Building are also depicted. Dominating the scene is the massive New York Tower of the Brooklyn Bridge, which was completed in 1883. If you wish to browse our entire available inventory please go to OneofaKindAntiques.com.
