Manly, Commander. This particular type of sailing ship is called a barque. It is shown sailing into Hong Kong port with Hawks Peak in the background. The barque has gun ports painted on its sides, although it does not have any cannon. These ships were so painted to deceive marauding pirates. If pirates believed a ship was manned with cannon, they were were much less likely to attack it. His natural skills as a painter were not supported by his family. He left his family at age 17 and received much acclaim for his work under his assumed name. But, for political purposes, he was not able to work. He was drafted in the Syrian military as a graphic artist for seven years. He ended up with a wife and family in Beirut, where he escaped with false passports. His wife then left him (with his children) never to be heard from again. Topes de Collantes, Trinidad, Cuba (Topes of Collantes, Trinidad, Cuba), ca. 1930.Gonzalo Escalante Díaz was born on January 9, 1865 in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, and died on August 28, 1939, in Havana, Cuba. Escalante studied painting and music in Mexico City during 1880 to 1884 and then traveled to Madrid, Spain, where he continued studied from 1884 to 1888 at the Academy San Fernando. In 1888 he exhibited artworks at the Exposition Universal de Barcelona and shortly afterwards, in 1890 he moved to Cuba and established residency in the city of Guantánamo. There in the Oriente province of the Island he intensified his artistic endeavors, and by 1918 to 1920 he was totally dedicated to painting as the only means to provide for a family composed of his wife, Carmen Preval, and five children. His preferred subject matters were landscapes, marinas and the occasional portrait. By 1931 Gonzalo Escalante moved to Havana and there he established friendships with Fidelio Ponce and other well known artists. In 1937 he exhibited two works at the Beau Arts Salon sponsored by the Círculo de Bellas Artes. During those years the gallery and art supplies store La Venecia, located in Old Havana, represented the artist and sold his work to the public. Various Gonzalo Escalante’s works are part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of Cuba, in Havana. The front is a series of barns and the back is entitled "Wharves". Harry Ivan Day, Jr., was born 11/17/1912 in Haverhill, MA, and died 2/18/2001 in Bradenton, FL. He descended from Joseph Lewis, one of the first settlers of Boothbay, ME. A renowned photographer and artist, Mr. Day owned the Harry Day Gallery on Union Street in Boothbay Harbor for 45 years. His addressed included NYC, Forest Hills, NY, Westport, CT, Essex, CT, and Jackson, NH, where he had an art gallery 1969-1991. He attended Staunton Military Academy, Chauncy Hall, Massachusetts School of Art, and the New York Institute of Photography. He was the sole photographer for Van Cleef and Arpels Jewelry for eight years. He also photographed such celebrities as Lilli Pons, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Babe Paley, Marlene Dietrich, and Solomon Guggenheim. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and the Art Student League. He was the first American photographer to exhibit at England's Royal Photographic Society, and became a Fellow. Mr. Day married his wife Jannis in 1940. She died in 1993.
