Japanese Edo Abumi stirrups by Nakamura Keiken

Pair of Abumi, saddle stirrups made by “Nakamura Keiken”. The Nakamura family are well known metal artists who also made Tsuba and other Samurai metal works in the Japanese Edo period. This pair of stirrups are both inlaid with pure gold and have Ryusui, a water theme. Natural wear, minor gold loss in some areas. Dating from the 18th-19th century. Each strirup measures 12 inches long x 10 inches high x 5 inches wide. Stirrups like these were used to support the rider’s feet while seated on horseback. During warfare, they allowed mounted samurai to stabilize position and control the horse while firing a weapon or brandishing a sword. Curving up and back in the front, they bring the loop for the leather connecting-strap over the instep, providing superior balance. Only high-ranking samurai could ride horses in the Edo period. Elegantly decorated stirrups were a sign of the owner’s privileged position.

Minzuno Toshikata woodcut triptych Chinski admiral in an interior ships engaged in battle

Minzuno Toshikata (Japanese, 1866-1908), colored woodcut triptych, depicting Chinski admiral Ding Ruchang popelniajacy samobojstwo in an interior, ships engaged in battle. The frame measures 20.5 x 34 inches and the woodblock print measures 14 x 27.5 inches. Very good condition. The photos show some reflection spots because it is under glass, which is very hard to photograph. Toshikata was born as Mizuno Kumejirō in 1866 in Tokyo to a plasterer's family. When he was thirteen years old his father, Nonaka Kichigoro, sent him to study with Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892), who was to designate Toshikata as his successor. Yoshitoshi gave him the character toshi (年 or its variant 秊) from his own name as the first character of his art name Toshikata. Yoshitoshi is also said to have passed his artist seals along to Toshikata1. He also apprenticed for a time with the ceramic painter Yamada Ryuto and studied traditional Japanese painting (nanga) with Shibata Hoshu and Watanabe Shōtei (aka Watanabe Seitei, 1851-1918). In 1887, on Yoshitoshi's recommendation, he succeeded Yoshitoshi as the illustrator at the newspaper Yamato shimbun, where he achieved acclaim. He worked at the Yamato shimbum until 1894. During the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), which brought about a brief resurgence of woodblock printmaking, he created a large body of work depicting battle scenes. His work is some of the best to be produced during that period. He was active as a painter of genre and historical subjects, receiving awards of merit in 1898, 1899, 1900 and 1902 at the joint Japan Art Institute/Japan Painting Association (Nihon Bijutsuin/Nihon Kaiga Kyokai) exhibition and was active in the Japan Art Society (Nihon Bijutsu Kyōkai), and the Japan Painting Society (Nihon Kaiga Kyōkai) and the Academy of Japanese Art (Nippon Bijutsuin). Takahashi Hiroaki Shotei Japanese woodblock print Abukuma River

Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) (Japanese, 1871-1945), woodblock print, boats on Abukuma River in heavy rain, artist's signature and seal. Measures 7 x 15.5 inches. Excellent original condition. Hiroaki Takahashi (also known as Shotei) (1871-1945) was a 20th-century Japanese woodblock artist in the shin-hanga art movement. Hiroaki Takahashi was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1871. As a young artist he assumed the artistic name Shotei. As with many Japanese woodblock artists over his lifetime he signed his work with various names and worked for several publishing companies. After studying art, Shotei and Terazaki Kogyo founded the Japan Youth Painting Society in 1889. In 1907, as a successful artist, he was recruited by Shozaburo Watanabe to contribute to the Shin Hanga (New Prints) art movement in Japan. Watanabe helped to fulfill the Western demand for Ukiyoe woodblock prints which would be similar to familiar historical masters of that genre, including Hiroshige. In about 1921 Shotei added the artistic name of Hiroaki. In 1923 the Great Kanto Earthquake (and subsequent fire) destroyed Watanabe's facilities; this included all Shin Hanga woodblocks. Thus, Shotei recreated prior designs destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake and also continued to produce new woodblocks. He is believed to have died in 1945. Since Watanabe produced artwork for Western collectors there are numerous copies of Shotei woodblocks in Western museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. In all original condition. Signed lower left and chop mark lower right. Munakata was born in 1903 and died in 1975. There was a wonderful exhibition of Munakatas woodcut screens Jan 9, 1968 through February 18, 1968 at the Brooklyn Museum in NY. To see a video of the artist go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym43CuWX240. Munakata was a practicing Buddhist born in 1903, the son of a blacksmith in Aomori Prefecture, located in the North of Japan's main island. He first began to paint in oil as a self-taught artist. Later in 1924 he went to Tokyo to study art with the hopes of becoming a Western-style painter.Inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh, In 1926 he saw and was impressed by a book of woodblock-printed poems and pictures by the artist Sumio Kawakami (1895?1972) and in 1928 he visited the printmaker Un?ichi Hiratsuka (b 1895) and received instruction in the woodblock printing technique. In the same year he was selected for the first time to submit an oil painting to the 9th Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition). In 1936 Muneyoshi Yanagi, a theologian and philosopher who founded the Mingei (folk arts) movement, and the ceramicists Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai acknowledged his prints and from that time they encouraged him. In turn he was spiritually and ideologically influenced by the spokesman of Japanese Romanticism, Yojuro Yasuda (1910?81), who praised Japanese art and aesthetics rather than the contemporary Western mentality that was popular at the time. At this time, he also seriously considered the importance of traditional folk customs Many of his prints and paintings show religious subjects. Other subjects are taken from Japanese legends or from nature. After World War II had ended, the artist became famous outside Japan. His works were shown at the Lugano Print Exhibition in 1952, the Sao Paulo Biennal in 1955, the Venice Biennal in 1956. In each of these exhibitions he was awarded with first prizes. After these successful exhibition, Munakata went to the U.S., where he lectured at different universities and had numerous solo exhibitions

There is an exhibition listing in the New York Magazine April 13, 1970 issue for an exhibit by Toyoshima at the Katz gallery 38 E 63 NYC through April 18 1970. and in December 1969 titled "Young New York". Neo-Dadaism Organizers were a group of Japanese artists who showed at the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions of the late 1950s and developed ?anti-art? activities modeled on those of the DADA movement. There were frequent dissolutions and reformings, but the group that formed in March 1960 included Masunobu Yoshimura (b 1932), Genpei Akasegawa (b 1937),Shusaku Arakawa, Sho Kazakura, Ushio Shinohara (b 1933) and Soroku Toyoshima (and later Shintaro Tanaka (b 1940) and Shin Kinoshita); with the exception of Tetsumi Kudo and Tomio Miki, who associated with the group but never joined, it seemed then to comprise all the major ?anti-art? artists in Japan. Here is a quote from his son Tak Toyosihma who's Asian American-themed comic strip, Secret Asian Man, is now nationally syndicated in major newspapers across the United States." I am also certainly inspired by both of my artistic parents as well as my older brother whose artistic skills I grew up being jealous of Toyoshima adds. My dad, Soroku Toyoshima, was one of a few neo-Dadaist artists coming out of Japan during the 1950s and 1960s, and has shown his work at the Tokyo Museum as well as a number of other shows in Japan and NYC ".

Japanese Carved Boxwood incense box Round Kogo Meiji period

A fantastic small antique Japanese round kogo (incense box) with a low relief carved design on the entire piece depicting a grapevine with grapes. Signed on the base with a three character signature. The inner box reaches to almost the top of the cover. It would have taken a master wood craftsman to be able to have turned a single piece of wood on a lathe to create a top as tin as this one without breaking it. The entire top piece would have had to be carved ever so carefully because of the extra thin sides. If it cracked during the carving or while being turned out on the lathe it would have had to be completely remade. The attached base sits on a scrolled bottom with three raised legs. Measures two and one half inches in diameter by two and three sixteenth inches high. Excellent condition with no cracks or chips. Dates from the mid the late Meiji Period, circa 1880 to 1900. The attached single piece base sits on a scrolled bottom with three raised legs. Measures 2 and one half inches in diameter by 2 and three sixteenth inches high. Japanese Meiji Miniature Jewelry cabinet box with Menuki

Japanese Meiji Miniature Jewelry cabinet box with Menuki.Menuki were placed under the tsuka ito to help with the grip of the sword. They were often elaborately decorated and featured a variety of designs A very nicely crafted miniature camphor wood parquetry cabinet that has had thirty one menuki appplied to the front, top and inside on the front of two drawers. The menuki have a variety of design including dragons, frogs with leaf umbrellas, boats, deer and florals. There are four main drawers. Three on the left side and one wide drawer at the bottom. On the right is a sliding panel that reveals two more small drawers inside. The sides and back are unadorned. The chest measures 7 and one half inches high by 7 and seven eighths inches wide by 4 and one quarter inches deep and is in excellent condition with nice old patina ( and a lot of dust in the crevices of the menuki). On the bottom of the wide drawer at the base of the chest we found that it had a beautiful inscription ( M.G. M. Spexarth Your birthday October 27, 1884 from Your Gus). We suspect the piece was brought back in the that period by some sailor or adventurer who had visiting Japan and bought the piece for his sweetheart. A lovely example of Victorian script in the inscription. Obviously the piece is from the early to mid 1880s in order to have been given as a treasure in 1884. Rare Japanese cloisonne Ginbari covered Cat box Meiji

We have been collecting and handling Japanese cloisonne for many years and have NEVER seen a piece quite as unusual as this one. A thorough search of all the literature that we have on Japanese cloisonne does not reveal any other example of figurals done in cloissone. While birds and animals are plentiful in Chinese cloisonne, this appears to be one of the rarest of Japanese works, made even more so by the magnificent blue ginbari ground of the piece. Formed in the shaped of a reclining cat, it is a covered dish or box form with floral standard cloisonne patterns on the ginbari background. The piece is in very fine condition with no chips and no cracks on dings in the enameling. It is 6 inches long, 4 and three quarter inches high to the tip of the ears and 3 and one quarter inches wide at the widest. Dates from the mid Meiji period, circa 1890 to1910. An important piece for any collector of superb Japanese cloisonne

Japanese Boxwood Covered carved Crane box Edo Meiji

This is an important example of the finest in late Edo to early Meiji wood carving. The piece is a covered box carved in the shape of a nesting Japanese Crane. Incredible detail to the feathers and head. Fine old patina indicates a dating from 1840 to 1870. The box measures 6 and seven eighths inches long by 3 inches wide by 3 inches high. The interior has been accented with either a light wash of gold lacquer or gold paint. Of particular note is the interior base which has been skillfully carved to make it look as if it were made of strips of interwoven wood or bamboo. The box is signed on the base. The signature translates to Dosen Z ( made by Dosen). The very tip of the tail on the upper lid has had a chipped end which has been very finely restored, we owned the piece for several years and did not even notice the repair until taking the photos for this listing. For the Japanese, the crane or tsuru is considered a national treasure, appearing in art, literature, and folklore. The Japanese regard the crane as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. There are three small feet missing from one tray, and there probably was a metal liner for the bottom tier. This doesn't affect quality of the piece. These 3 sm box lids show the 3 Winter Friends, Plum, Pine, & Bamboo. The sm hole in the bottom of the 2nd tier is used to poke ones finger thru to get the 1st incense box out. The top tier would hold mica chips on which the incense is burned. Since 4 fragrances are used in kogo, the exterior top compartment would hold the "guest fragrance". Japanese hand painted tea set Gemchina

Japanese tea set. It was made in Satsuma, a province in the southern part of Kyushu. The decoration is Kyoto-style, meaning it was made in a workshop in one of the busy trade centers such as Kyoto, Yokohama, or Osaka, for export to the West. The set was made about 1930. The raised-dot designs are called moriage; the images of a lady appearing in the bottom of the cups are called halophanes. Both these features are typical of 20th century Satsuma pottery. Earlier 19th century pieces are decorated in delicately drawn, exquisite detail on a finely crackled surface. Later on, as foreign demand for this pottery increased, the decoration became bolder, darker, and more abstract. Japanese tea sets are usually made in odd numbers, because they are considered luckier than even numbers.

Japanese bronze Meiji floor lamp

Japanese bronze floor lamp. This is a classic example of Meiji era style. Its design is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese toro, or temple lantern, minus the top. An actual toro would have a lantern top with a little "roof" and gridwork sides through which the flame would cast light. The earliest ones are stone, later ones are iron or bronze. During the Meiji period, 1868 to 1912, Japan began exporting heavily to the United States, especially bronzes and ceramics. These exported goods were tailored to Western needs and tastes. If you examine Meiji-era ceramics, particularly Imari, Arita, and Satsuma, you will see the same designs as the ones on this lamp. Floor lamps such as like this one were ofter used to illuminate a grand piano.

On a trip to Korea in 1911, he was asked to paint the king. Foujita seemed destined for a career in the Orient until he traveled to London in 1912 and then, in 1913, went to live in Paris. He discovered European contemporary art, much as the French, in the nineteenth-century, had discovered Japanese prints. Foujita had his first exhibition in Paris in 1917 and by 1924 he was one of the most important exhibitors at the Salon d' Automne. He returned to Paris at the outbreak of World War II and remained there until 1941 after which he spent nine years in Tokyo" (This information was obtained at http://www.3d-dali.com/Artist-Biographies/Tsuguharu_Foujita.html)

Antique Annamese jewelry box with inlay

Antique Annamese jewelry box with inlaid with mother of pearl c1890. This wonderful pierce carved octagonal box measures 10 and one half inches across and four and one half inches high. The quality of the inlay work is as good as it gets obviously done by a master. There are flowers, birds, scrolls, butterflies, grasses inlaid all over the top and all eight of the interiors sides. Excellent original condition. There is a wonderful contrast in the way the mother of pearl was set to give a lovely three dimensional effect. For many years such rosewood boxes were labeled Chinese, mostly because they carry Buddhist/Taoist/Confucious motifs. Nobody has been able to duplicate the refined, precise cutting of shell, then placed into an artistic space by Annamese artists of the late 19thC/early 20thC. Or duplicate the exact reflective rainbow coloring of shells used by the Annamese. The purpose of the boxes were quite similar to Chinese stuff--gifts for wedding, food offerings, etc. Japanese MOP has a slick quality about it, not found on the mainland of SE Asia. Annamese is a region and former kingdom of central Vietnam on the South China Sea between Tonkin and Cochin China. It was ruled by China from 111 B.C. until A.D. 939 and came under French control in the 19th century. This beautiful box would make the perfect gift.

Vintage Japanese Kyoto Style Satsuma Pottery Vase

The raised designs (called moriage) and the finely crackled glaze are hallmarks of Satsuma pottery. Earlier 19th century pieces are decorated in minute, delicately drawn, exquisite detail.
