English dome top burl walnut tea caddy c1830

English dome top burl walnut tea box c1820-40 in original condition including key. Measures 9.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches high and 5 inches deep. Tea was introduced to England from China sometime in the middle of the 17th century. Although there are earlier references of its use by traders in China, it was not until 1657 that we have the first account of its sale in England. Together with the fragrant leaf came the respect for this drink and the ceremonial way in which it was to be prepared and drunk. Tea was pivotal in the history of Britain in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To understand the full impact of the importation of tea we have to consider the fiscal implications of this newly introduced commodity. The tea and opium trade were inextricably interlinked. Although wooden Tea Caddies were made early in the 18th century, it is not until the second half of the century that they were introduced in any numbers as a home style accessory. The word caddy derives from the Malay "kati" a measure of weight about 3/5 of a kilo. The 17th century tea containers were bottle shaped tea jars in china, glass, silver, enamel and straw-work covered metal. Tea caddies came in all shapes and styles and sizes. Some were wooden caddies, others were veneered in tortoiseshell, horn, straw-work and sadeli mosaic. Tea Caddies were made in wood in box form from the second quarter of the 18th century. The first such boxes were shaped like small chests and contained three metal canisters. They were mostly made of mahogany although a few early ones were of walnut. Very occasionally a chinoiserie box was made. Complete boxes of this type are difficult to find, especially in walnut. Chinoiserie boxes are exceedingly rare. Sterling silver letter box William Comyns Sons maker London c1902

Sterling silver letter box William Comyns and Sons maker London c1902. Silver over leather over wood. Measures 5.5 inches deep by 8 inches high by 12 inches wide. Wonderful original condition with moire silk interior. William Comyns purchased the business of Robert Tagg, itself said to have been founded about 1730. As yet efforts to trace the latter's lineage have failed; it seems clear, however, that Tagg succeeded John Tapley at 40 Roupell Street, Waterloo Road. Tapley, a manufacturing silversmith, was probably the last of Rundell, Bridge & Co.'s outworkers and is also known to have provided work for Robert Green & Co and Makepeace & Walford. Robert Tagg moved in 1857 to his new residence and manufactory at 2 Carlise Street, Soho Square, where by 1859 he listed as a silversmith. William Comyns, thereafter listed as a silversmith, appears to have purchased the business in 1858 or early 1859, entering his first marks from the first same address. He moved to 1 Percy Mews, Rathbone Place, the to 16 Silver Street, Golden Square, Soho, and seubsequently to Beak Street, Regent Street. These premised were later expanded to 41, 43, and 45 Beak street and to 41, 43, 45, 47 Beak Street. Additional premised were taken from c. 1903 at 54 Marshall Street, Soh. The style of the firm was changed to William Comyns & Son c. 1885 when William Comyn's two sons, Charles Harling Comyns and Richard Harling Comyns were admitted to their partnership. William Comyns died in January 1916, and C.H. Comyns while attending a sale in Christie's in 1925. The business was incorporated as limited liability company as William comyn's & Sons Ltd., registered on 20th October 1930, with R.H. Comyns as permanent governing director. Upon the latter's death in 1953, when the firm is said to have lost its former prominence, William Comyns & Sons Ltd was purchased by Bernard Copping. They are now one of the few surviving manufacturing silversmiths in London, with premises at Comyns House, Tower Street, London, WC2. William Comyns first appears to have made a significant impact in the early 1880s by supplying increasingly large numbers of decorative wares in silver, many of which were die-stamped. London retailers of their products at this period included Henry Lewis, Howell & James Ltd., etcetera. Bio from http://www.koopmanrareart.com

English Mahogany and brass laptop desk c1800

English Mahogany and brass lap top desk c1800. We were told by the estate that this antique laptop desk had belonged to Lord Pentland. It is without a doubt the best laptop desk we have had. The box is made from the finest matching mahogany with inset brass braces all around its sides, middle, and top. The desk opens to a tapered, hand tooled leather writing surface. Inside there are compartments for pens, pencils, and an ink well. When we removed the tray, we suspected that the box had a secret compartment. After several hours, we located a tiny slot that, when a pen knife is inserted into it, releases a solid mahogany board concealing three fine small drawers just underneath the inkwell and pencil holder. It is nearly impossible to detect. The box is in excellent condition with original key. Measures 16 inches wide by 10 inches deep and 6 inches high. Opens to 20 inches.

Japanese Meiji Miniature Jewelry cabinet box with Menuki

Japanese Meiji Miniature Jewelry cabinet box with Menuki.Menuki were placed under the tsuka ito to help with the grip of the sword. They were often elaborately decorated and featured a variety of designs A very nicely crafted miniature camphor wood parquetry cabinet that has had thirty one menuki appplied to the front, top and inside on the front of two drawers. The menuki have a variety of design including dragons, frogs with leaf umbrellas, boats, deer and florals. There are four main drawers. Three on the left side and one wide drawer at the bottom. On the right is a sliding panel that reveals two more small drawers inside. The sides and back are unadorned. The chest measures 7 and one half inches high by 7 and seven eighths inches wide by 4 and one quarter inches deep and is in excellent condition with nice old patina ( and a lot of dust in the crevices of the menuki). On the bottom of the wide drawer at the base of the chest we found that it had a beautiful inscription ( M.G. M. Spexarth Your birthday October 27, 1884 from Your Gus). We suspect the piece was brought back in the that period by some sailor or adventurer who had visiting Japan and bought the piece for his sweetheart. A lovely example of Victorian script in the inscription. Obviously the piece is from the early to mid 1880s in order to have been given as a treasure in 1884. Rare Japanese cloisonne Ginbari covered Cat box Meiji

We have been collecting and handling Japanese cloisonne for many years and have NEVER seen a piece quite as unusual as this one. A thorough search of all the literature that we have on Japanese cloisonne does not reveal any other example of figurals done in cloissone. While birds and animals are plentiful in Chinese cloisonne, this appears to be one of the rarest of Japanese works, made even more so by the magnificent blue ginbari ground of the piece. Formed in the shaped of a reclining cat, it is a covered dish or box form with floral standard cloisonne patterns on the ginbari background. The piece is in very fine condition with no chips and no cracks on dings in the enameling. It is 6 inches long, 4 and three quarter inches high to the tip of the ears and 3 and one quarter inches wide at the widest. Dates from the mid Meiji period, circa 1890 to1910. An important piece for any collector of superb Japanese cloisonne

Japanese Boxwood Covered carved Crane box Edo Meiji

This is an important example of the finest in late Edo to early Meiji wood carving. The piece is a covered box carved in the shape of a nesting Japanese Crane. Incredible detail to the feathers and head. Fine old patina indicates a dating from 1840 to 1870. The box measures 6 and seven eighths inches long by 3 inches wide by 3 inches high. The interior has been accented with either a light wash of gold lacquer or gold paint. Of particular note is the interior base which has been skillfully carved to make it look as if it were made of strips of interwoven wood or bamboo. The box is signed on the base. The signature translates to Dosen Z ( made by Dosen). The very tip of the tail on the upper lid has had a chipped end which has been very finely restored, we owned the piece for several years and did not even notice the repair until taking the photos for this listing. For the Japanese, the crane or tsuru is considered a national treasure, appearing in art, literature, and folklore. The Japanese regard the crane as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. Antique Annamese jewelry box with inlay

Antique Annamese covered jewelry or glove box with inlay. This Annamese jewelry box with inlaid mother of pearl dates from c1890. This rare inlaid box measures 12 and one quarter inches wide by 7 inches deep and 2 and one quarter inches high. The quality of the inlay work is as good as it gets obviously done by a master. There are flowers, birds, scrolls, butterflies, grasses along with Civets inlaid all over the top and sides. Excellent original condition. There is a wonderful contrast in the way the mother of pearl was set to give a lovely three dimensional effect. For many years such rosewood boxes were labeled Chinese, mostly because they carry Buddhist/Taoist/Confucious motifs. Nobody has been able to duplicate the refined, precise cutting of shell, then placed into an artistic space by Annamese artists of the late 19thC/early 20thC. Or duplicate the exact reflective rainbow coloring of shells used by the Annamese. The purpose of the boxes were quite similar to Chinese stuff--gifts for wedding, food offerings, etc. Japanese MOP has a slick quality about it, not found on the mainland of SE Asia. Annamese is a region and former kingdom of central Vietnam on the South China Sea between Tonkin and Cochin China. It was ruled by China from 111 B.C. until A.D. 939 and came under French control in the 19th century. It is hard to photograph the intense change in color the mother of pearl in this antique box has. This beautiful box would make the perfect gift.
