Chinese Modern Pair of end tables in the style of the flamboyant NY and Hollywood designer James Mont. Excellent condition, made by Kittinger circa 1960. Long and low-slung form in black lacquer with inset marble top and brass fretwork. The marble has black, gray and taupe striations. Excellent condition. The tables each measure 25.5 wide x 24.5 inches deep x 21 inches high. This iconic style is often called Hollywood Regency or Regency Moderne; it is characterized by the bold use of color and contrast often with metallic and glass accents meant to signify both opulence and comfort. It is named for the early movie-making industry of southern California as typified by the glamorous homes of the actors and actresses of Hollywood's "Golden Era" of the 1920s through the 1950s. James Mont designed many fabulous pieces of furniture for movie stars such as John Barrymore and Paulette Godard, as well as other wealthy, celebrated, and sometimes notorious people.
