Antique set of 13 hand painted Royal Doulton bone china historical castle plates, retailed by Higgins and Seiter, NY. Each is 10.5 inches in diameter, in perfect condition, and signed by artist J. Hughp for John Hugh Plant. Mr. Plant worked at Doulton between 1902-1920. After studying at the Hanley School of Art and serving his apprenticeship at the Brown-Westhead, Moore Pottery in that town, he spent many years with Coalport and Wedgwood as a painter of landscapes and animals before joining Doulton in 1902. A versatile and accomplished artist, his signature is found on many fine pieces depicting views of Venice, Rome and other Italian cities, rustic scenes, old castles, palaces, cathedrals and cottages. His architectural sketches and drawings were of a high order. Other examples of his work include paintings of ships after Turner, fishing boats, barges, yachts, deer and other animals, game birds and fish.
