Set of 4 early American painted dining chairs, often called fancy chairs. Philadelphia or Baltimore, circa 1820. Each features a ring-turned crest and rail; a clasped rosette between back scrolling stiles centering a gilded anthemion-shaped splat; a shaped rush seat; ring and column-turned tapering legs with gilt stenciled leaves; and a flat front stretcher centering a gilded rosette. Wonderful blue-green ground with gilt. Each is 32.5 inches high to the back, 18 inches high to the seat, 16 inches deep, and 17 inches wide at the front. Just in from a CT estate in as found original condition. Please see Christie's NY Important American Furniture sale 9054, lots 746 and 747, page 198 and 199, for identical pairs sold at auction.
