Willem Roelofs Dutch landscape painting. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1859. The quiet scene depicts a woman walking beside a river with a small arched bridge and a house in the background. Roelofs was born in Amsterdam in 1822 and died in Antwerp in 1897. He studied with H Van de Zande Bakhuyzen at the Hague Academy in Brussels from 1847 to 1887. He came under the influence of the French painters of the Barbizon School, particularly Dabigny and Rousseau. Roelofs was known for his water and meadow scenes.
