A fanciful view of Nantucket Island by artist Clara Stroud, oil on linen panel, circa 1920. Clara Stroud was a painter, designer, block printer, and teacher. She was born in 1890 in New Orleans, LA, and lived in Herbertsville, NJ. She studied at Pratt Inst. (B.A., M.F.A.), with Gustave Cimiotti, Winhold Reiss, Jay Hambidge, and Ralph Johonnot; at Ringling School of Art, Sarasota, FL with Eliot OHara; and at Yale School of FA. She was a member of Natl. Assn. of Women Painters & Sculptors; NYWC Club; Amer. WC Soc.; Manasquan River Group of Artists; Amer. Artists Prof. League; Asbury Park Soc. FA; Sarasota AA; St. Augustine AA; Shore Points AG; Allied Artists of Venice, FL; NJ WC Soc.; Essex (NJ) WC Soc.; Newark Keramic Soc.; and the Guild of Creative Art. She exhibited at Arch. League NYC; Peabody Inst., Baltimore; Am. Inst. of Arch.; Edison Shop, E. Orange, NJ; Soc. of Independent Artists; Ardsley Gal., Brooklyn; Brooklyn Soc. Artists; Brooklyn WC Club; Salons of Am.; Brooklyn Mus.; Arts Club, Wash., DC; Ringling Mus. of Art; Argent Gal., NYC; Phila. WC Club; PAFA; Balt. Mus. of Art; Rochester Mus.; Amer. Painting measures 19 inches by 20 inches, frame measures 27 inches by 28 inches.
