Since 1979 the Society has grown tremendously and membership now includes current and former employees of Federal, state, and private map repositories; collectors with scholarly knowledge gained through years of study; individuals who enjoy selling maps - both old and new; and many members who simply love to learn about or collect maps. Membership is open to anyone who shares these common interests.

The International Map Collectors' Society (IMCoS)
IMCOS LogoThe International Map Collectors' Society (IMCoS) is a non-profit organization based in London that serves as a forum for those who are interested in maps. It brings together a unique and diverse group of collectors, dealers, librarians and academics. Some members have an extensive knowledge of maps and the Society includes several authors of books on cartography. The vast majority, however, belong to IMCoS simply because they like maps, want to learn more about them and enjoy involvement with people who share a similar enthusiasm. The only requirement to join is a love of maps. There aim is to promote and encourage map collecting, the study of cartography and its history. The preservation of maps for future generations is encouraged and practical information is provided to assist with this process.

The Road Map Collectors of America
The Road Map Collectors of America is a group of road map collectors throughout North America and Great Britain who have joined together to promote the hobby and network with trading partners. Begun just a few years ago, this group now boasts over 300 members, and holds its annual meet in Chicago to give collectors a chance to visit with each other and learn more about the hobby.

The California Map Society
The California Map Society is a diverse group of people from across the State of California who share a common interest in maps. Some are collectors of antiquarian maps who delight in exploring how man's perception of his world has changed, particularly as it applies to California. Other members have interests in today's maps and in how we can show not only the land but the patterns of human development and change. Some members are scholars who have published numerous books and articles on various aspects of map making. Others are dealers in antiquarian books and maps with wide backgrounds in the historical nature of maps. Many people become members simply to satisfy their curiosity about maps and mapmakers.

Philip Lee Phillips Society
The Philip Lee Phillips Society has been established to further develop, enhance and promote the collections of the Geography and Map Division by encouraging financial donations to supplement appropriated funds for the acquisition of rare maps; stimulating interest among map collectors, map producers, geographers, cartographers, and historians in order to make the vast resources of the nation's premier cartographic and geographic collections more widely available; facilitating gifts and bequests of significant geographic and cartographic materials in order to further develop its collections; and advancing the Geography and Map Division's publication, education, and exhibition programs.

The Chicago Map Society
The Chicago Map Society is an organization devoted to bringing together people interested in all aspects of maps and mapping -- their history, uses, production, and preservation. There are no special qualifications for membership; the only requirement is an interest in maps. The oldest map society in North America (founded in 1976), the Chicago Map Society meets monthly except in June, July, and August. Most meetings feature a speaker, and there are occasional field trips, chances for collectors to show their maps, and special dinner meetings. A broad spectrum of cartographic subjects has been addressed at past meetings.

The Osher Library Associates
The Associates of the Osher Map Library is an affiliated group that supports activities and programs of the map library. They promote the educational and outreach goals of the Library and plan seminars, field trips and other formal and informal activities to further the objectives of the map library. They are a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and membership is open to the general public.

The Boston Map Society
The Harvard Map Collection is home to the Boston Map Society. The society was formed in 1994 to bring together people with an interest in collecting, studying, using, and preserving maps. Membership is open to everyone and includes map collectors, curators, dealers, and individuals with a general interest in maps. The society schedules regular meetings in the Boston Area. Programs are planned to include various topics related to cartography and are open to the public. Previous meeting topics have included fire insurance maps and their digital reformatting, an annual "Map Bazaar" where members bring in maps from their collections to identify, a historical survey of the early maps and charts of Japan, openings for the Harvard Map Collection's Bicycle Map Exhibit and Railroad Map Exhibit, and a presentation on cartographic methods from 1940 to the present.

Society for the History of Discoveries
The Society was formed to stimulate interest in teaching, research, and publishing the history of geographical exploration. Founded in 1960, the Society includes members from various academic disciplines as well as archivists, non-affiliated scholars, and laypersons with an interest in history. The scope of the Society's activities encompasses the discovery, exploration, and mapping of the earth's land and sea surface from the earliest times to the present - the explorers and the explored.

The Rocky Mountain Map Society
The Rocky Mountain Map Society was organized in February of 1991 to support and encourage the study and preservation of maps and related materials. The Society meets quarterly and generally has a speaker on a map topic followed by a period of general discussion including a "show-and-tell" period where members bring maps of general interest and describe them for the group; often other members add interesting bits of information. The Society has had a particular interest in the 19th Century maps of the Rocky Mountain Region and 16th Century maps of the "New World".

The Society has no newsletter- its only mailings are meeting announcements. There are currently approximately 30 paid members of the Society; most reside in the Denver metropolitan area, however, several live in nearby states. Annual dues are $10 for which members also receive a subscription to Mapline Magazine published by The Newberry Library in Chicago. To date all meetings have been in Denver.
