Renaissance period altar frontal dated 1529Renaissance period altar frontal dated 1529. Probably North Italian, possibly Austrian. Expressively carved central panels depicting the scourging, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Smaller panels depict the thorns and nails of His torment, and His image on the shroud of Turin. Original gilt and polychrome on wood, with some later paint. Ex. coll. Sienna College. Measures 50 inches high x 82 inches wide x 5 inches deep. Compelling presence. Very heavy. |
