Carved North Wind Directors Chair c1890. made of oak, dating from about 1890 or so, well after the Civil War. The distinctive face medallion is called a north wind. The north wind theme was popular during the 19th century, particularly in England; it was inspired by the grotesques (gargoyle like masks) often seen on European furniture of the late Renaissance. Your chair was machine made. The mask has cracked, but the chair back has not. That is because the north wind mask was a separate piece that was applied (glued) to the chair back. It was not an integral part of the chair back that was carved by hand. Manufactured ornamental carvings were widely available and in use at the time
