Antique Plantation Desk or Secretary

Antique secretary desk of midwestern or midatlantic origin, made circa 1860. This particular form is usually described as a plantation desk, a vernacular term for a secretary desk on legs with drawers, file slots, and cubbyholes, used by overseers, managers, doctors, et al. Some plantation desks have fall-front writing surfaces; yours has a slant-front surface. The views shown in the photos and the construction methods indicate that it is entirely hand-made and in very good original condition. The only exception may be the writing surface, but that is fairly inconsequen-tial. The primary wood could be tulip. The cabinet doors have nice burr-wood center panels. The secondary wood appears to be pine. This antique desk measures 55 and one half inches wide overall., 61 inches high overall, 33 and three quarter inches front to back, deep.
